In between Day 1 and Day 2: getting a wiki going

Tuesday was the first day of class. It was a very exciting and gratifying meeting for me — and I also, I believe, for my students. Tomorrow is the second meeting, one for which I’m preparing right at this moment. One matter that has kept me busy has been “infrastructure building”. I set up this blog to communicate with my students but I have yet to write much here. I also created a course wiki. I’m getting up to speed on how to use the MediaWiki software. Although I’ve experienced MediaWiki as a reader and sometimes contributer to the Wikipedia, I’ve had to figure out some features that are new to me — such as how to create a new page. I will encourage my students to do what I’ve done: create a user account and then create an individual sandbox page.

2738 Building Next-Generation Web Applications

Prerequisites: Experience using web applications, writing HTML, and ideally some programming background (e.g., the Advanced Internet Classroom or equivalent). The most important requirement is the willingness to tackle and synthesize many new concepts in a short time. By creating a mashup-oriented project–an application that re-combines information from a variety of source–students will learn how to build interactive websites that use cutting edge technologies such as XML, XML web services, and AJAX. Students will be supported in developing their vision throughout the project lifecycle, from brainstorming ideas and proposing a doable project to implementing their design and then presenting their work to their peers and the entire ATDP community–all in six weeks! Teamwork is highly encouraged.
